The orphanage

St. Laurent orphanage

St. Laurent orphanage is located in Ifakara, in Kilombero district, in the region of Morogoro. It is a center for children who are less lucky and have to face difficult situations at an early age. Most of them have lost their parents.

In 1999, Expeditha Njige established the center with seven children, four boys and three girls aged from 1 month to 4 years old.

She got assistance to fulfill her dream from  Maria Paula, a nun from Switzerland working in Ifakara, and Fr. Salutaris Mpinge, the parish priest of Ifakara.

Expeditha Njidge passed away on 24/12/2002.

Her sister Rose Njige with her mother Emelensiana Njige pledged to continue Expeditha’s dream.

In 2007Maria Paula left to Switzerland and this was the end of her assistance.

Meanwhile, the number of the children increased to 17 and there wasn’t enough space to accommodate all of them. So, in 2008 they had to move from Ifakara  town to Lungongole village which is 17 km far from town.

Since 2008, with the help of Fr. Salutaris’s friends from Germany, three houses have been built, one for boys, one for girls and one for older children. Each house includes six rooms and toilet. The orphanage has water supply and solar electricity.

Since 2015, the orphanage has acquired friends from Greece. Their association named IfakarAid, sends to the orphanage financial aid.

It is very important for the orphanage to have stable friends who assist in any way. The needs are many such as food, agricultural production, housing, clothing and school fees.
